There's more to the 12-Minute Approach than great number 12. Some principles and premises also inspire this revolutionary method.

They are exposed here with some brief explanations:

1-Realize Your Dreams

Having dreams is essential. Dreams give life a meaning. They give you a purpose and a sense of direction.

Planning to realize your dreams is also important. By setting goals and making plans, you’ll move closer to your dreams.

Your unconscious and intuition will guide you thru the venture even if you don’t possess all the details right now.

Additional Interesting Budgeting Ideas

A couple months ago, we started this series on budgeting by presenting our distinctive way to Enjoy the Pleasures of Budgeting.

Last time, we talked about How Budgeting Can Be So Simple and Easy as even children can have fun with it.

Today, a more profound look at budgeting will propose interesting advanced budget ideas.

So, let’s cut to the chase and get right to it!

Additional Budget Tips

Before spending any of your hard-earned cash, you should always ask yourself this vital question:
Do I really need it?

As we already talked before, in our consumption-driven society, a lot of people seem to crave high-ticket items and end up buying plenty of useless stuff.

To address this bad habit and improve deficient buying decision making, we like to convert possible purchases into working hours.

Wacky Golf Fact (Revisited) – Birdie Hunting

The Wacky Golf Fact Series was originally posted in 2016.

Our initial plan was to add new articles to this fun series but the Rules Modernization proposed by the golf authorities caught us of guard.

Even though these new rules won't be in effect till January 1st 2019, they still propose major changes and will completely revolutionize they way we play golf and enforce the rules. Don't get us wrong, we welcome these changes and they should be great for golf! We are just not ready to talk and write about them yet.

So you will note that our article still refers to the actual and soon to be thing-of-the-past golf rules.

This one occurred to my bubbies and me many summers ago. Back then, we were young golf studs or at least thought so.

That morning, Frank had a particularly bad outing with his famous driver. When we got to the 17th hole, a long but sometime reachable par 5, he was determined to have his vengeance and tried to hit a bomb off the tee. And he did!

He probably made his best pass of the day and hit a wonderful powerful drive in the center of the club right down the middle of the fairway. His fancy driver even mad a big POW!

Changing Habits and Improving The 12-Minute Way: Inspirational Real-Life Story

About 18 months ago, our friend Josh was feeling odd. He often felt tired and lacked stamina. He would catch any tiny virus coming his way. His body constantly aching, he was also starting to get moody. All this was kind of puzzling to him.

Then one day, he hopped on a scale and was shocked he had gained more than 15 pounds over the last few years. Suddenly, he realized he was probably working too much, often eating on the go and not exercising that much anymore. During that week, his family physician confirmed what he already knew and gave him the classic eat-healthy-and-exercise advice.

Familiar with the 12-Minute Method, he immediately took matters into his own hands and started changing. At first, it was not that obvious with his busy schedule and all. But he gradually made the necessary modifications to some of his habits as his physical and mental wellbeing depended on it.

On that occupied fall afternoon, he still took 12-Minute to think and access the situation: right away, he decided he would have to lose 20 pounds over the next year (12 months). The next day, he immediately took action and went on a 12-Minute power walk to clear up his mind and revitalize his body.

After a dozen days, he quickly got the hang of it. His hearth and soul felt much better (his weight getting under control not long afterwards).

Wake Up 12-Minute Earlier to Compensate Lack of Sleep

If you’re like me, sometimes, because of a lack of sleep, you feel excruciatingly tired when your alarm wakes you up. You would only like to comfortably stay in bed. Especially if your job isn’t that motivating. Some of these mornings, everything seems difficult, you’re stuck in neutral and can’t get going. You can even end up dragging that awful feeling all day.

A few years back, my family doctor had a great suggestion to solve this problem: to wake up earlier! This may seem like a contradiction but it really works! At least for me…

Having a couple more minutes to spare, you can take time to relax and diminish the stress of a hectic morning routine. Just be careful not to become too relaxed and run late...

This course of action also has a complimentary beneficial effect: a tad more tired of night, you should get better deeper sleep.

Three four days and good nights into the process, you’ll feel rested, relaxed and ready to conquer the world.

So, next time a shortage of sleep leaves you repetitively stuck in bed, think of the opposite and set your alarm 12-Minute earlier to break up the vicious circle.

The more we look at it, the more Number 12 appears Magical!

In its original stages, our research revolved more around number 15.
But, as soon as we dug deeper, 12 evidently became the front running candidate.

For one thing, a dozen always fits way better in a box!

More seriously, remarkable Twelve as deep roots throughout History;
it even has some kind of mystical character associated to it.

How Budgeting Can Be So Simple and Easy

Last month, we wrote about our unique way to Enjoy the Pleasures of Budgeting.

Today, we’ll continue on the same exciting subject and see how budgeting can be simple, accessible and even fun for everyone. We’ll also share some easy starting pointers. These fundamental basic budget principles should get you going in the right direction.

In our next and last article of this three-part series on budgeting (coming your way in June), we’ll continue to expose our distinctive point of view on the matter. Additional Interesting Budget Ideas will be presented to you along with more elaborate tips.

Simple Math

Many people get stopped by the supposedly complex nature of budgets.

But in fact, budgeting is only basic math. The arithmetic behind a balanced budget is far from rocket science. You only must obtain a positive result (greater than zero) when you add up your different sources of income and subtract all your expenses. No magic can get you around this basic budget equation.

Keep It Simple

You should only use financial products you understand. So, stick to the basics. Complex and complicated products often only serve those who sell them.

Same goes for stocks, only invest in solid companies you know and understand.

In this great Internet/Information era, it’s relatively simple to get data on any public company. To stay effective, we recommend you only take 12-Minute when you first analyze a potential candidate for your portfolio or watch list.

Enjoy the Pleasures of Budgeting

Many view the budget as an ugly nagging beast they will never be able to master. Because it only reminds them about the frustration of being in the red, they prefer to ignore it instead of trying to tame it.

In the same fashion, many other persons not completely averse to budgets still find it utterly dull. In that sense, a lot of people resign themselves to accept the sad truth that money matters are a reality of our modern life and nobody can really get around it.

For us, keeping a budget is quite the opposite. It’s much more fun and to some extent, it rhymes with excitement! We get those pleasant vibes perhaps because we mostly associate budgeting to having dreams, realizing projects and the freedom of making choices.

From our standpoint, a budget is an easy-to-use tool to understand where your hard earned money goes. It helps you regain or keep control over it. It can also point out interesting opportunities to improve.

An effective budget can be set-up on a single piece of paper, using the most sophisticated software or with many possibilities in-between.

Next time, we’ll talk about How Budgeting Can Be So Simple and Easy.

So today, let us expose our unique point of view on this simple yet extraordinary tool. Let’s hope you’ll see how powerful it can also become for you!

Risk Getting Poor with No-Risk Investment

When it comes to their investment, some people are literally obsessed about protecting their capital. They are so afraid to loose money that they will never be able to make any.

They sometimes brag about not losing money in the last big stock market correction. But they forget they also missed out nice market runs before and after the dreaded correction.

For one thing, the only guaranteed fact about no-risk investment like GICs is that they will leave you poor if you count on them in the long run. Most of the time, GICs won’t even get you enough to just keep up with inflation. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t recommend speculating in stocks in the short-term; GICs still can have their use and may be better suited if you know your money will be needed within a couple years (for instance, for a down payment on your house).

Oftentimes, the price you pay to protect your capital is simply too high and paying for that useless guarantee on a long period of time doesn’t make any sense. As an alternative, on top of interesting returns, a diversified portfolio constituted of solid companies should provide for free that long-term intrinsic guarantee.

Trying to avoid short-term loss of capital at any cost, you will ultimately miss out on significant long-term returns. So avoid overly protecting your capital because in the end, it will only help you stay poor.

When it comes down to food, the 12-Minute Way can be quite useful to help you manage your diet and plan your meals.

There’s more to it than the common dozen eggs.

Because approximately 40% of food goes to waste in America, an incredible opportunity for improvement exists in the vast food domain, an opportunity to save precious resources and money.

But also an opportunity to reduce stress and free up some of your schedule because, day after day, food preparation can sometimes be pretty hectic and time consuming.

Despite everyone’s fears after the US election, markets ended 2016 very well. In fact, this year usual «Santa Claus Rally» was replaced by a very nice «Trump Rally».

Will it last? Our typical answer prevails: nobody knows!

Markets still look expensive as they continue to hover close to record highs. In the latter part of January, we could sense markets were getting nervous about the first moves of the Trump administration. In fact, turbulences began around inauguration day.

DIY Outrageous Fees

Because of the new investment-fee disclosure rules in Canada, information on our annual investment statements has changed a bit. These changes also apply to DIY investors.

As a result, a couple weeks back, looking at one of our investment accounts 2016 annual statement, I was quite shocked. We are paying outrageous fees!
OK, I’m just being a tad ironic.

Despite the fact we made 6 transactions in that account last year (which is a lot because our average over the years is under 2) and that we paid the highest cost per transaction compared to our other DIY accounts, our annual fees still represented just 0.19% of our account value.

As we already discussed a while back, fees are probably one of the main reasons our DIY Portfolio is doing much better than popular funds.

Here’s the same chart we presented First in July 2015 and Again in November 2015. You can see that even though the gap has narrowed a little, we still remain well ahead.
